Salina was established in 1860 as prospectors traveling to Pikes Peak in hopes of gold began to settle in the area. It also began as a trading post between the local native tribes and Fort Leavenworth, a US Army post. After the Civil War, the Union Pacific Railroad built tracks through Salina in 1867. The city began transporting meat in refrigerated railroad cars. In the 1870s wheat became a leading crop and a steam powered flour mill was constructed.

Woman killed in Saline County crash

The crash was reported at 2:05 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Holmes Road and Crawford Street on the west side of Salina. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2011 Hyundai Sonata was traveling east in the westbound lane of Crawford when it made an evasive maneuver to the south.

Niles woman survives rattlesnake bite

Her right leg burned the night of Aug. 3 as Avoree Siler, 21, propped her foot on the dashboard of her boyfriend's speeding Mustang. Her boyfriend, C.J. Brown, was driving 155 miles an hour from Niles toward Salina, wanting to get Avoree to Salina Regional Health Center as quickly as possible.

A Kansas man has been indicted on charges that he fired the shots that wounded a southern Illinois police officer during a chase two years ago. A Jackson County grand jury returned the indictment Thursday against 24-year-old Alex B. Karcher of Salina, Kansas, on felony charges of aggravated battery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The accusation was made by Beverly and Matthew Fullen and their attorney in a motion filed June 19 in Saline County District Court in an effort to persuade Saline County District Judge Rene Young to dismiss animal cruelty charges against the Salina mother and son, The Salina Journal reported.
