Defense Attorney in Smaller MS-13 Case Seeks To Disqualify Judge

A defense attorney has filed a motion to boot Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge John McGregor off one of the cases stemming from multiple murders and attempted murders in the Santa Maria area. Attorney Gary Dunlap represents Rafael Lainez Castro, 32, in the case connected to arrests of alleged members of the MS-13 criminal street gang in March 2016 and leading to grand jury indictments in July 2016.

Highway 166 was closed Friday afternoon east of the Cuyama Valley due to a fatal crash and authorities are recommending motorists use Highway 46 as the east-west route to the San Joaquin Valley and Interstate 5. A Sig-Alert has been issued as of 3:37 p.m. due the crash near the intersection of Highways 166 and 33, according to the California Highway Patrol emergency dispatch report. Just before 2 p.m., crews began responding to the fatal crash which involved a hay truck and a white sedan 1 mile west of the Elkhorn Grade, CHP dispatch reports said.
