Salina was established in 1860 as prospectors traveling to Pikes Peak in hopes of gold began to settle in the area. It also began as a trading post between the local native tribes and Fort Leavenworth, a US Army post. After the Civil War, the Union Pacific Railroad built tracks through Salina in 1867. The city began transporting meat in refrigerated railroad cars. In the 1870s wheat became a leading crop and a steam powered flour mill was constructed.
