Salina was established in 1860 as prospectors traveling to Pikes Peak in hopes of gold began to settle in the area. It also began as a trading post between the local native tribes and Fort Leavenworth, a US Army post. After the Civil War, the Union Pacific Railroad built tracks through Salina in 1867. The city began transporting meat in refrigerated railroad cars. In the 1870s wheat became a leading crop and a steam powered flour mill was constructed.

Homeless man critically injured in fire he apparently set just north of Salina

A man who appears to have set a fire to stay warm was found unconscious and badly burned in a field just north of Salina on Saturday evening, Sheriff Roger Soldan said. Brett Hageman, 49, from Lincoln, Neb., who is believed to be transient, apparently fell asleep after starting the fire, Soldan said.
