The town is home to the Mill Pond Falls, which was named for the sawmill which was built in 1860 where the town now stands. The waterfall is only 16 feet high, making it the smallest natural waterfall in the nation. It is a part of the town's history and is even depicted in the Newington town seal. Residents celebrate the Mill Pond Falls every fall during the Waterfall Festival which takes place each September.

Four Teachers Among Board Cuts

Board of Education budget reductions-to get down to the 0.3 percent increase approved by the Town Council a few weeks ago-will cost the district four positions while again deferring the opening of the high school level STEM academy. It was almost five, but Board member Josh Shulman proposed the deferment of a custodial hire, as well as the directing of an additional $20,000 in non-lapsing surplus funds, to save an elementary school teacher position that would have been eliminated in order to retain a full time music instructor.

MDC Member Towns To Meet Wednesday To Discuss Proposed Sewer User Fee Study

Member towns of the Metropolitan District plan to meet Wednesday morning to discuss a sewer user fee study proposal that could result in a change to the way customers pay for waste-water treatment. Ahead of that meeting, some member towns have also expressed concerns with the MDC's plan to work with Lamont Financial Services and Amawalk Consulting Group to look into changing from an ad valorem, or property-tax driven model, to a user-based approach.
