Manchester was first settled by colonists in 1672. It quickly became a farming community, but due to the fact that the many waterways provided power, the town was quickly transformed into an industrial center with power, paper, lumber and textile industries. In 1838, the Cheney family began the world's largest silk mill. The mills, the homes of the owners and workers of the mills, are now part of the Cheney Brothers Historic District, which is now a National Historic Landmark.
