Mission Viejo council sets aside $100,000 for investigation into need for district elections

Current and former City Council members argued Tuesday, Nov. 28 that the city doesn't need district-based elections, saying it has a history of Latino representation on the council and that the Latino population is evenly spread throughout the city. After the discussion at the second of five required hearings on a potential switch from at-large to district elections, the City Council gave staff direction to spend up to $100,000 to investigate the city's past elections to evaluate the claim by "I really feel dismayed about this whole situation," Councilman Brian Goodell said.

Teen bicyclist struck by vehicle, killed in Lake Forest

A teenage boy was struck by a vehicle and later died of his injuries at a local hospital, Nov. 22, authorities said. About 2:40 a.m., Nov. 21, Orange County Sheriff's Department deputies were dispatched to Jeronimo Road and Lake Forest Drive where they found the boy, identified as 17-year old Arata Ogikubo of Lake Forest, severely injured in the roadway, sheriff's spokeswoman Jaimee Blashaw said Monday, Nov. 27. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene.

A man who drove drunk and veered into oncoming traffic while making a turn, slamming head-on into a minivan and killing a mother of three in Lake Forest, was convicted today of second-degree murder. William Joseph Carroll, 51, of Mission Viejo, had a blood-alcohol level of about 0.23 -- nearly three times the legal limit -- when his Ford F- 250 pickup truck slammed into a Toyota Sienna minivan driven by 36-year-old Ana Martinez about 11:40 p.m. May 7, 2013, Deputy District Attorney Daniel Feldman told jurors during the trial.
