Salt was discovered in Kansas near Hutchinson in the late 1880s, giving rise to the first salt manufacturing plants west of the Mississippi River. In the early 1920s, the Carey Salt Company opened the first salt mine in Hutchinson, producing only rock salt. The mine is still used today but is operated by the Hutchinson Salt Company. Today the companies Cargill and Morton Salt have evaporative salt plants located within the city limits. Mike Rowe filmed an episode of his TV show "Dirty Jobs" in Hutchinson, focusing on mining salt.
