About: escondido, california

Escondido is located just north of San Diego in southern California. The city's name means "hidden" or "secret" in Spanish and was named so because it sits in a shallow valley that is surrounded by rocky hills. Today Escondido is primarily a residential community, but it was once an agricultural center. Initially farmers grew muscat grapes. After the construction of the dam that formed Lake Wohlford, olives and walnuts were grown, and oranges and lemons were densely planted. Avocados had become Escondido's largest crop by the 1960s.
