Aliso Viejo is located along the coast bordering the Pacific Ocean in southern California. The land where Aliso Viejo now sits was originally sold to Juan Avila by the Mexican government in 1842 before the US-Mexican War. In the 1890s Avila sold 22,000 acres to the Moulton family, who used the land as a ranch. In 1976 the Mission Viejo Company purchased the remaining 6,600 acres to build a planned community.
